Stelvio Natual Skimo Trails: The new outdoor offering of managed ski mountaineering
Why choose between ski mountaineering and alpine skiing when you can experience both in one unique adventure?
Among the most beloved destinations in the Alps for winter sports, Bormio certainly holds a privileged position, not only because it is an Olympic location but also due to its longstanding attention to snow sports enthusiasts, always aiming to satisfy their evolving desires. Among the new offerings for the 24/25 winter season are the Stelvio Natural Skimo Trails, a managed ski mountaineering outdoor experience, designed for those who love on-piste descents but want to enrich their day on the snow with a more adventurous activity, like skinning uphill, without sacrificing well-maintained, equipped, and safe routes.
The Skimo Trails are already active in the ski areas of Bormio, Santa Caterina Valfurva, and Cima Piazzi-San Colombano, thanks to the involvement and collaboration of various local entities. At the start of each trail, you will find rental equipment points, informational panels about the route, and educational signs on mountain safety, as well as an essential ARTVA checkpoint to verify the proper functioning of your safety device. All of this allows you to prepare for your outings with awareness and fully enjoy the thrills of the Stelvio Natural Skimo Trails!
Discover the Stelvio Natural Skimo Trails! The lift companies are also collaborating for the first time with ski mountaineers to offer a unique experience: explore routes immersed in nature and enjoy the descent on groomed slopes. A new seasonal ski pass for €145 (€110 for CAI and FISI members) will allow you to use one ski lift per day (in one of the 4 areas) to reach the highest altitudes even when the snow conditions in the valley are not optimal for the ascent with skins. Remember that for your safety on the track and that of others, personal liability insurance coverage is mandatory and can be purchased separately!

Why take on the Natural Skimo Trails experience? Here are 5 reasons!
Each of the three active trails has distinctive features in terms of scenery and setting, thanks to the diversity and richness of the areas in which they develop: Bormio, Valdisotto, and Valfurva.
- Accessibility – easily access the trails, as you can rely on the lifts to take you to high altitudes.
- Management and Maintenance – enjoy the peace of mind that comes with traveling on regularly maintained and managed trails, just like on the downhill slopes.
- Safety – the trails are designed and marked by local experts and professionals, such as Alpine Guides and the Bormio Skimo team, and are constantly monitored, ensuring they are safe.
- Insurance – as access is only possible with a pass, personal liability insurance (mandatory on ski slopes) can be integrated at the time of purchase for those who don't have it.
- Community – the many services offered by the ski areas (e.g., refreshment points, rentals, guided tours with alpine guides, etc.) will make you feel part of a community, with whom you can share the spirit and emotions of this new outdoor experience on the snow.
All of these benefits are the result of the collaboration of various local entities and the valuable synergies created to offer you and all ski mountaineering enthusiasts a truly unique experience in terms of safety, organization, and the completeness of the services provided.
Conceived and coordinated by Società Multiservizi Alta Valle, the Stelvio Natural Skimo Trails project benefits from the contributions of:
- Institutions (Municipalities, Stelvio National Park, Cmav, Forest Consortium) – for land management, signage, and co-financing;
- Lift Companies – for the use of the downhill slopes, ticketing, supply, and installation of signage and markers;
- Local Associations (Cai, Bormio Skimo, Ski Club) – for development and periodic maintenance;
- Industry Companies (Ski Trab, Camp, and Crazy Idea) – for support;
- Alpine Guides – for trail management;
- Service Companies – for offering rentals, shelters, hotels, alpine guides, shops, and transport.
If the Stelvio Natural Skimo Trails proposal excites you, all that's left is to plan your holiday in the Bormio ski area! Right here, where in 2026, the first-ever Olympic ski mountaineering races will be held.
It might be a great idea to experience the skialp adventure right in the Olympic venue where the champions will compete, don't you think?
