What a find. Sondalo hides lots of little treasures that make it unique. From health and nature, to history and culture, it’s bound to surprise you.
Sondalo is a hidden gem just waiting to be discovered. Its name is often linked to the Sanatoriums there: what is now the Morelli Hospital, and the famous Pineta di Sortenna. A visit to the Sanatorium Museum is highly recommended.
But Sondalo is so much more. It has a long history, already established in the 11th century, some local legends insist there was a large lake in the area. The name Sondalo indicates that it was probably land that was held and worked by a landowner and his serfs.
We recommend taking the time to stroll through the narrow winding streets and alleys of the old town. We are certain that you will be pleasantly surprised at the numerous churches, like Santa Maria Maggiore (the Blessed Virgin Mary), St. Marta e St. Agnes, fountains (a rest stop at the Bui Redond fountain is a must), historic buildings and frescos. One particular must see is the Romìt, the oldest wooden crucifix in all of Valtellina (XII century). You can find it at the modern Church of St. Francis.
But Sondalo is also nature. Located within the Stelvio National Park, there are numerous options for those who love the outdoors. Among all the hiking trails in the area, the queen is undoubtedly the Val di Rezzalo, a real outdoor museum with its rich and varied flora and fauna and significant examples of rural architecture.
Sondalo is also the ideal place for precious stone lovers, being one of the richest mineralogical areas in Valtellina. The underground quartz cave is one of the most important in Europe.
