Italy Trail - SI D36N

We set off from Rifugio Campo (m. 2000) following the signs for Baita del Pastore, leaving behind green meadows used for grazing and the last characteristic huts of Val Zebru'. Upon reaching the Baita (water point with picnic area) the trail branches off. Heading left, the trail continues with a series of hairpin bends gaining elevation from first over grassy bumps and then continuing into the vast and large moraine of the Val Rio Mare'. From here the trail narrows but still remains easy to access, allowing you to reach the historic Quinto Alpini Bertarelli hut comfortably in about 3 hours (originally called the Milano hut, opened August 24, 1884). Situated on a rocky outcrop on the slopes of the Zebru' glacier, the hut is a destination and support base for hikers, mountaineers and a welcome point for the Sentiero Italia trail. From the Quinto Alpini Bertarelli Refuge you descend slightly along the same ascent route to a large sass where there are signs to reach the Zebru' Passes. Continue halfway up a scree slope to the pass accompanied by breathtaking scenery and then continue slightly downhill on wide stretches of meadow rich in alpine flora and fauna, interspersed with stretches of rocky path to the junction that joins the path that climbs from Baita del Pastore. Instead, heading to the right and following the signs indicating Zebru' Pass, one ascends gently along the path that, crossing numerous streams, abandons the green meadows for a more barren and stony landscape. From here you continue along the path that has become barren and wild and come to a short section of rocky steps that you overcome with the help of metal ropes and then continue on a less steep path, which can be snow-covered for part of the summer season. On reaching Zebru' Pass (m. 3010) , the panorama extends from Gran Zebru' (m. 3857) to the Forni glacier to the Thirteen Peaks. We continue downhill towards Val Cedec; first in the direction of Rifugio Pizzini (m. 2,706) and then crossing the stream along the path that gently descends to Rifugio Branca (m. 2493).
