THE PROPOSAL
The Alpini of Piatta await you at the Palueta hairpin bend to accompany you along a scenic route on the western slopes of Monte Vallecetta, through pastures and clearings, rediscovering traces of human presence from distant times.
WHAT ARE COPPELLE? Coppelle are spherical-shaped carvings of varying diameter and depth, made on mica-schist-phylladic rock monoliths (a soft, workable rock with gray-brown hues, common in these areas) using harder stones like quartz, marble, or granite. There is extensive literature on these rock carvings, which are especially characteristic of the Alpine and pre-Alpine arc. The most credible hypotheses date these "signs" from the Neolithic - Copper Age (4th-3rd millennium BC) to much more recent times.
LOCATION The trail runs along the slopes of Monte Vallecetta between 1700 meters and 1900 meters above sea level, starting from the Palueta curve (3rd hairpin bend on the road to Bormio 2000) above the village of S. Pietro, covering a length of about 7 km. The route is well signposted with signs created by the Stelvio National Park, placed by the Alpini Group of Piatta along the path and near the Coppellate Stones in 2005 (the year the eponymous trail was inaugurated).
TARGET AUDIENCE: excursion suitable for everyone. Hiking boots are recommended.
INFO AND RESERVATIONS In case of bad weather, the activity will NOT take place.
