The route has very different characteristics, between the first part with optimal gradient up to Carona and the second part in Valcaronella, on dirt and cemented road with considerable gradient that forces the use of medium-high motor assistance. From San Giacomo di Teglio to Carona the route winds through dense vegetation making it shady and cool even in the warm months. The second section allows you to reach the first wide valley shelf where a nice picnic area has been set up. The road would go on until below a waterfall, but then becomes a narrow hairpin path that is difficult to ride. Downhill at the fork below Carona you can turn right, reach the Ponte di Ganda dam (Valbelviso) and return west on a nice little track until you resume the uphill route: unfortunately currently (2018) a landslide interrupts a short section making it exposed and therefore inadvisable Texts and photos by Federico Pollini.
