Sensational. The glacier paths lead to the largest glacier in the area, the Forni Glacier.
Whether you choose to take the higher or the lower glacier path the sensation is the same, that of being in the presence of one of nature’s giants, the Forni glacier, to this day one of the largest in Italy.
From Santa Caterina Valfurva, head to the Rifugio Forni (2,200m) where the paved road ends, by car or shuttle bus. The path begins here and then splits into two, creating the lower glacier path, suitable for less expert hikers, and the upper path, for those who are more confident walking in the mountains.
Along the lower route you will see evident signs of the movement of the glacier in the valley, and upon reaching Lake Rosole you can admire the front of the glacier. From here after a short climb the path leads to the Rifugio Branca, from where there is an easy path back to Rifugio Forni.
The upper glacier path is a longer circular route that splits off from the lower path and climbing up along the mountainside takes you, via landscapes shaped by the passage of the glacier, to the caves under the Forni glacier and on to two rope bridges. The final stretch of the upper path is the same as the lower as both lead to Lake Rosole and Rifugio Branca from where you can enjoy incomparable views over the Forni valley.
Remember that an Alpine guide offers useful support for any type of excursion, as well as providing extra safety and interesting information.
