Spring transforms into a magical season for ski mountaineering enthusiasts: countless unique routes await you among untouched valleys and towering peaks. From the picturesque Valle dei Forni to the Gavia Valley, passing through breathtaking landscapes in Val Viola and beyond, our offerings cater to all levels, from beginners to experts.
Why Choose Spring Ski Mountaineering?
- Ideal Conditions: The mild spring temperatures and the presence of glaciers make this season perfect for exploring our mountains.
- Adrenaline and Relaxation: Combine the thrill of ascending to high altitudes with the joy of a refreshing break in an alpine refuge.
- A Growing Sport: With ski mountaineering set to debut as an Olympic sport in Bormio in 2026, every outing becomes an opportunity to be part of history.
Routes for Every Taste
A wide range of options:
The region offers a diverse network of trails, from easy routes ideal for beginners to technical and challenging itineraries on prestigious mountains such as Gran Zebrù or Tresero.
- Easy Routes: Simple yet spectacular excursions like Cima Branca or Croce della Cima del Bosco. Or trails near the slopes, which, with the help of ski lifts, offer immediate access and stunning views, such as the Plaghera itinerary.
- Intermediate Routes: Adventurous climbs to peaks like Corno San Colombano or Monte Pasquale, with elevation gains that challenge physical and technical preparation.
- Difficult Routes: High-altitude adventures where glaciers and steep inclines require specialized equipment and, in some cases, expert alpine guides. These routes include ascents to Cima Piazzi and Gran Zebrù.
The Network of Refuges and Infrastructure
Key high-altitude points:
In the surroundings of Bormio and across the valleys of Alta Valtellina, a well-established network of alpine refuges is ready to welcome you from early March.
- Top-Quality Refuges:
- Rifugio Forni, Rifugio Branca, and Rifugio Pizzini serve as strategic starting points for excursions in the Forni Glacier area.
- In Val Viola, Agriturismo Baita Caricc and Rifugio Federico in Dosdè offer food and relaxation during your days in the mountains.
Preparation and Safety
Guidelines for mountain adventures:
Ski mountaineering requires not only good physical condition but also the right equipment and a three-layer technical outfit:
- Thermal Layer: Breathable and insulating base layer to maintain body temperature.
- Mid Layer: A material that provides warmth without restricting movement.
- Protective Layer: A shield against wind, rain, and snow, essential for high-altitude excursions.
Essential Equipment:
- Ski mountaineering boots
- Bindings and specialized skis
- Poles, crampons, and rescue equipment (shovel, probe, and ARTVA) for icy sections
Local alpine guides are always available to advise you on the best route and provide essential safety knowledge for a worry-free experience.
